The issues people come to therapy with are directly related and come out of the experiences they had in the early years of life. For instance, a person's struggle with pornography instead of alcohol is related to his experience growing up and the way he learned to manage himself. The process often takes longer and the depths one must go to experience change in problem areas often requires more exploration and in-depth work than one finds comfortable.

The people who experience the greatest success in therapy are those who are aware that the ways they have lived are keeping them from being more of who they truly are. As people experience the safety and security of the therapy relationship, the self develops and lets go of worn out and ineffective defenses that once allowed the person to get along in life the best he or she could in the absence of the meaningful and close connection with others they desire.
